Dinoflex was founded in Salmon Arm, British Columbia in 1989 by Sabine Presch, with the backing of her father Peter Presch, an early pioneer of polyurethane coating applications in Germany. Just two years later Sabine established Dinoflex’s sister company and onsite chemical supplier, International Polyurethane Systems. Both companies were built in Salmon Arm’s Industrial Park area which has since developed into a high-tech manufacturing hub for innovative businesses.
In 1992 Dinoflex purchased additional land and constructed an 8,000sq.ft. plant in order to produce polyurethane binder. This was followed by a new warehouse building in 1995 and offices in 1998. By this time production included not only outdoor rubber tiles, but also indoor flooring in the form of Dinoflex’s ‘Sport Mat’ for the fitness industry.
By 2000 Dinoflex had refined its stringent cleaning process for removing rock and Kevlar remnants from its raw, post-consumer materials. The presence of non-rubber materials is a common quality concern in the recycled rubber industry, as the slightest imperfection can cause unsightly streaks and marks in the final product. This innovation helped propel the company forward to compete against its virgin material flooring competitors, with a more sustainable and environmentally friendly product.
Just a decade after its foundation, Dinoflex was competing in both the commercial and retail business markets, selling into over 40 countries. In addition to their popular fitness flooring Dinoflex was offering a full line of colourful resilient flooring for applications from offices to airports. By 2007 the business was diverting millions of tires from the landfill and quickly becoming a well-known name in the industry.
Sabine operated the business for 20 years before selling to Vancouver-based company Pender West Capital Partners. Since 2008 Pender West has continued to invest in the growth of Dinoflex Group. In 2018 Dinoflex announced a $3.5 million expansion and upgrade to increase capacity and efficiencies. The planned upgrades included a new manufacturing building, production equipment, and work-station automation.
Working closely with local construction and tech companies Dinoflex broke ground on the new build in early 2019 and is currently developing plans for its new customized equipment. The site will be busy with construction in the months to come as Dinoflex prepares for the future and continues its 30-year legacy of growth and innovation.
"We've all got an eye on business sustainability. When a company can recycle materials that would have gone to landfill and produce products that are better for human health, that’s a big step in the right direction."
